Network loops and broadcast storms are among the most disruptive failures in enterprise LANs. When Layer 2 paths form a loop without Spanning Tree or equivalent protection, frames can recirculate, switch CPU spikes, and users experience intermittent or total loss of connectivity. Early symptoms often include cascading MAC flaps, high interface utilization on unexpected ports, and sudden latency across otherwise healthy segments.
Isolation is the priority. Identify which VLAN or access layer is affected, check for recent cabling changes or unauthorized switches, and review STP/RSTP/MSTP status, root bridge placement, and port roles. Temporarily shutting suspected ports in a controlled order can stop the storm while you confirm the topology. Capture evidence before and after each change so you can prove which link restored stability.
Prevention depends on design and discipline: enable loop protection features, restrict end-user ports, document the physical and logical topology, and train teams to verify STP health after every move/add/change. When loops do occur, a calm, sequential troubleshooting method restores service faster than random cable pulls—and turns the incident into a durable operational lesson.
